O’s Notes: Russ met The Kenny Werner Trio in 2001 and became a student of their sound and is happily blowing his sax with them for this recording 7 years later. The quartet is Kenny Werner (p), Johannes Weidenmueller (b), Ari Hoenig (d) and Russ. Hoenig sets the pace with funky beats starting with the opener “Kilson’s Groove”. This entire team is all full of fire playing Nolan’s originals with a lot of spirit. It’s mostly neobop with a few ballads and a really warm cover of “Naima”. These nine tunes have depth, bop and cool; it’s worthy of a listen.
