O’s Notes: Jessica plays piano and tenor sax. She also wrote ten of the twelve songs on Word. Candace Jones sings on Side A in front of a swinging band. Highlights were “Miss Kelly’s” and the bouncy “Yesterdays”. They switch gears on Side B featuring Arisa White and Abe Maneri with the spoken word, a poetic rap over blue jazz instrumentation. This new, poetic jazz form is catching on with the artsy, coffee house, eclectic crowd. The poems are ‘out there’ with weird messages that can be humorous or perhaps utter nonsense. I’d say it was free improvisation of words.
