O’s Notes: Pianist and composer Nick Sanders leads a trio with bassist Henry Fraser and drummer Connor Baker. You Are A Creature is his sophomore release. All of the tunes are original except Ornette Coleman’s “The Blessing”. Producer Fred Hersch is a notable influence but Nick’s style is unique with hints of Monk scattered throughout the set. He uses atypical, odd meters that are about as weird as the contortionist on the CD cover! But Sanders is comfortable in his space as are his band mates. We expect him to arise on the jazz music scene as a fresh voice with intriguing character.
