O’s Notes: Zubatto Syndicate is Seattle-based band with twelve members including bassoonist Francine Peterson and Janet Putnam (oboe & English horn). These two players contributions help differentiate the sound of this ensemble. They open with the rock-based fusion of “An Arrival” before relaxing on “Saturn 9” with Greg Sinbaldi (cl, ts) leading the melody. Drummer Byron Vannoy opens “Green Boy of Hurrah” and maintains a strong presence through that song and again on “The Abyssal Jungle”. Our favorites were “Inspector Automation” and “The Zubatto Song”. They wrap up with the jamming “Lords and Ladies of Venus” to cap a fine pop-fusion set.
