O’s Notes: Conrad Herwig plays trombone and wrote all of the compositions for The Tip of The Sword. The band is a trio with pianist Richie Beirach and Jack DeJohnette on drums. They recorded the session at ‘The Studio’ in New York back in 1994 but this is the first release in 2011. The music is melancholic with generous improvisation around core structures. DeJohnette is in prime form on “Thought Precedes Action” and “Inner Sincerity” while Herwig drives the melody. The beauty of this session is that the free bop is not encumbered by congestion, chaos or distortion. Instead the tones are rich and the stage is clear making this a formidable performance.
