O’s Notes: Drummer Reggie Quinerly takes a step back into African American history for inspiration on Freedmen Town. The title is the community in Houston that was home to a high concentration of successful African Americans after Emancipation Proclamation. Quinerly’s compositions capture the spirit of the times and serve as a musical inspiration to African Americans today as we embark on the challenges of the continuously evolving American demographic. This is an introspective set that includes a few popping tunes like ” The Virginia Gentleman”; a spiritual vocal track, “Victoria” featuring Sarah Elizabeth Charles, and a swinging arrangement of “I’m Old Fashioned”.
