O’s Notes: Trombonist Geoff Alpert is no relation to legendary jazz/pop trumpeter Herb Alpert but has picked up some of Herb’s successful contemporary jazz formula. There’s a pleasing mix of jazz, pop, Latin and R&B that makes the songs accessible to a large audience. He pays homage to The Crusaders on “The Crusade”, to Michael Jackson on “Heartbreak Hotel” and for his late wife on “Thinking of You”. Tamina Khyrah Joi, Anakha Neal and Maya Thomas add sweet harmonized vocals to five selections notably “Don’t Ask My Neighbors”. These are just a few highlights in an engaging set.“Open Your Heart“is Geoff’s debut recording, a lifelong dream that resulted in a home run!“
