O’s Notes: Alto saxophonist Steve Slagle is on top of his game for“Alto Manhattan, his new release inspired by many great Latino and jazz artists who made their home in upper Manhattan. Lawrence Fields (p), Gerald Cannon (b) and Bill Stewart (d) are his primary accompaniments with guest artists Joe Lovano (tenor sax) and Roman Diaz (congas) each appearing on three selections. They really swing on the title track (both versions) and “Inception”. Most of the music is new by Slagle but there are a few covers notably a solo alto take of “Body & Soul” and the warm romantic “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry”. Steve switches to flute for the last two songs imparting a lighter, fresh feeling to cap a fine session.
