Hazelrigg Brothers, 2017, CD
Instrument: Instrumental
Issue: 23.3
Jazz Ruler Type: Bebop
Performance: 3
Sound: 4
Score: 53
O’s Notes: George Hazelrigg plays piano and Geoff Hazelrigg plays bass with drummer John O’Reilly rounding out their trio. The Hazelrigg Brothers have outgrown the hard rock of their youth in favor of a more sophisticated sound. They fare well on the jazz front recasting tunes by Hendrix, Bartók, Page/Plant, Sting and Steely Dan in their own improvised style somewhere between Modern and Pop-based jazz. Our favorites are “Spirits In The Material World” and “What Is and What Should Never Be”. The music will resonate with baby boomers whose tastes have probably matured right along with the Hazelrigg’s!
