O’s Notes: Baritone saxophonist, composer, arranger Dave Schumacher leads a fine ensemble Cubeye, on Smoke In The Sky. The band includes pianist Manuel Valera, bassist Alex “Apolo” Ayala, percussionist Mauricio Herrera and Joel Mateo on drums. “Caridad” is a blistering, syncopated tune with crisp accents from trumpeter Jesus Ricardo complementing Schumacher’s baritone. We also liked the groove on “El Dilema De Chegüi Metralla”, “Cal Massey”, and the relaxing title track. This is easily one of the best Latin albums this year.
