O’s Notes: Drummer, bandleader Richard Baratta looks back at Charlie Parker on Another Kind of Bird. The band is top notch featuring arranger Bill O’Connell (p), Vincent Herring (sax), Paul Bollenback (g), Michael Goetz (b), and Paul Rossman (perc). Guest saxophonists Eric Alexander, Abraham Burton, and Craig Handy help bring the spirit of “Bird” back to life. Rich ballads like “Embraceable You” surround the popular burners “Yardbird Suite”, “Segment”, and “Donna Lee”. There’s a taste of Latin on “Little Suede Shoes”, and a sax attack on the fusion-laced “Ah-Leu-Cha”. This is a fine session on all accounts!
