O’s Notes: Trombonist Conrad Herwig continues his focus on Afro-Caribbean music with The Latin Side of McCoy Tyler, and it is yet another winning session! The band includes Craig Handy (sax), Alex Norris (t), Bill O’Connell (p), Ruben Rodriguez (b), Camilo Molina (perc), and Robby Amen (d). The layered brass is harmonious on top of electrifying rhythms on “Passion Dance”, and they swing on “Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit” with guest Eddie Palmieri on piano, balanced by warm ballads like “Search For Peace” featuring Herwig and pianist. We also enjoyed “African Village”, “Peresina”, and “Four By Five”.
