O’s Notes: Jazz guitarist, composer, singer Coleman Mellett was a complete musician who left us at 34 after a plane crash in 2009. He’d been working on an album as a singer-songwriter at the time. Producer Barry Miles combed through his computer for the files and solicited the help of many musicians that Mellett had worked with to release Sing You A Brand New Song. The effort was first presented as a documentary in 2019. The supporting artists include his wife, Jeanie Bryson who adds vocals on three selections notably “You Got Me Too”. Will Lee (b), Steve Gadd (d), Larry Goldings (organ), and Chuck Mangione (flugelhorn) are a sample of the talented cast. The music has the timeless vibe of Michael Franks/Steely Dan circa 1970s. There was a lot there!
