O’s Notes: The Last Trane To Africa is an adventurous musical encounter full of mysterious sounds and vibrant percussion. The inspiration is John Coltrane, and Dogole’s work is an appropriate salute. The opener, “Africa” took us into Dogole’s space and we were hooked. Sheldon Brown (b-cl) is strong on “Dahomey Dance”, Richard Howell (t-sax) engages on the earthy “Tunji” with poetry from Avotcja. We also enjoyed Dogole’s work on kalimba for “John Coltrane” with vocals from Howell.
