O’s Notes: Chicago-based bassist Christopher Dammann takes us on an improvisational jazz journey with Dead Words, billed as a collection of spiritual contrafacts. These are newly inspired melodies over chord progressions of a standard jazz tunes. Dammann’s accompanying band includes Jim Baker (p), James Davis (t), Jon Irabagon (sax), and Mike Reed (d). Our favorites of the five selections are the bookends, “Montrose B” and “This Is An Unraveling”, along with “White Gladis”.
