O’s Notes: Bobby, the funky drummer makes a strong presence right out of the gate on “877-SOUL” setting the stage for what follows. The songs alternate between abstract fusion tracks and funky SOUL numbers. We’d preferred the latter, all of them, as well as “Patricia”. These songs were all recorded live and have an engaging spirit and drive with a solid band: Steve Swallow (b), Wayne Horvitz (p), Marty Ehrlich (sax), Curtis Fowlkes (tb) and the architect Privite.
