O’s Notes: Abram reminds us of another contemporary jazz trumpeter, Tom Browne in his prime. Wilson is backed by a funky rhythm section but also has strong brass accompaniment with Nathaniel Facey (a sax) and Patrick Clahar (t sax, fl). They open with a sizzler, “Pedal Herlin” before Wilson shows us his vocal dimension on the mid tempo ballad “Golden Lady”. Then they swing hard on a neobop “Monk” before returning to the vocal funky title track including some scatting with a hip-hop groove. That’s the pattern and it continues with strong songs throughout, especially our favorite, “Free Myself”.
