O’s Notes: Ray is a well-respected percussionist on the Latin jazz circuit. For his second recording on Savant as a leader he enlists Edy Martinez (p), Enrique Fernandez (reeds), Mike Freeman (vibes), Bill Elder (d), Cucho Martinez (b) and guest artist Steve Berrios (perc). Many of these guys have played together with the late Ray Barretto and their familiarity comes through clearly. “Namesake” was our favorite track. The music is pleasant, warm and inviting but non-intrusive. It could be used as a backdrop for almost any occasion.
