O’s Notes: Belgian jazz keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin attempts to extract the music from his dreams on his latest release,“The Beginner’s Guide To Diving And Flying. It is the premier of his French acoustic quintet Orca Noise Unit. The band is Sylvaine Hélary (fl), Antonin Tri Hoang (cl, sax), Bruno Chevillon (b), Toma Gouband (perc) and Dumoulin. The music creates an eerie sense of adventure akin to a soundscape for a horror flick. There is generous use of space and quiet on the sound stage that draws listeners into the music. We enjoyed the evolution of “Little Lemon” and the racy cat & mouse exchange between Dumoulin and Chevillon on “The Bristlecone Pine”.
