O’s Notes: This is a fine set of New Orleans jazz and moonlight ballads led by trumpeter Rod McGaha. Rob stays true to the title playing several ballads and gracing them with wonderfully warm tones. Among the best are “When I Fall In Love”, “Never Let Me Go” and “How Long Has This Been Goin On”. The band balloons into a large ensemble with a lush 4-piece string section that further enhances the romantic mood on these selections. McGaha includes the calypso beats of “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White”. He displays excellent control of the mute on the bouncy “Sunny Side of the Street” making this one of the best jazz releases of the year.
