O’s Notes: Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith is one of the most adventurous jazz musicians on the jazz scene. He leads a trio with pianist Vijay Iyer and master Drummer Jack DeJohnette on A Love Sonnet For Billie Holiday. Jack opens the first track, ”A Love Sonnet” with a rich solo before Smith and Iyer join him in a fitting introduction to the album at large. Each of the musicians contribute original music and are deliberate in the performance allowing all of the nuances to their instruments to blossom. The resulting five compositions are gentle, thought-provoking and notable.
