O’s Notes: The incredible jazz bassist is in his zone for A Night in Monte-Carlo, a live set recorded in 2008. He opens with a funky orchestrated “Blast” followed by a really cool arrangement of “So What”. The core band includes Roy Hargrove (t), Raul Midón (vocals) and the introduction of Alex Han on sax. They have the power of a symphony orchestra behind them. Hargrove is brilliant especially with his warm tones on “I’m Glad There is You”. Midón’s soulful vocals are a change of pace and Miller works him into the repertoire. Marcus shines when he brings his bass to the spotlight playing the melody on “I Loves You Porgy” and otherwise unleashing ample amounts of funk wherever it is necessary. It’s Miller-time!
