O’s Notes: Drummer Charles Persip made his name playing with Dizzy Gillespie. On this recording as a leader he assembled an excellent team including Ron Carter (b) and trumpeters Marcus Belgrave and Freddie Hubbard during their early years. Each branched out following this 1961 effort. The roots to their success are evident here.
