O’s Notes: Young saxophonist Kirsten Edkins has the good fortune of having Bob Sheppard as a teacher, mentor, friend and producer of he debut recording Art & Soul. She has excellent support from Larry Goldings (B3, p), Larry Koonse (g), Mark Ferber (d), Mike Valerio (b), Mike Cottone (t), Ryan Dragon (tb) and Sheppard (sax, cl). Don’t be fooled by her poised presence on the CD cover, Kirsten can burn as she does on “Mean Greens” holding her own with the all-star cast. We enjoyed her rich tone on “Soul Eyes as well. Edkins shows maturity here that promises to blossom into many years of fine fruit. Art & Soul is a top notch, funky, soulful release that will be enjoyable for many plays.
