O’s Notes: Reggie Watkins is a trombonist with an interesting story, an“Avid Admirer“of the late Jimmy Knepper, a trombonist who was adept enough to burn with bop pioneers like Bird and Dizzy yet also warm and passionate when appropriate. Watkins picked up some of this style and was fortunate to also be gifted some of Knepper’s trombones! It’s a good story outlined in the liner notes. The music is mostly Knepper originals that swing featuring melodies by Watkins and co-producer Matt Parker (sax). There’s a tight rhythm section anchored by Reggie Quinerly (d) with Steve Whipple (b) and either Orrin Evans or Tuomo Uusitalo on piano. Together they recreate the bounce and groove of Knepper a la Watkins.
