O’s Notes: Italian saxophonist, composer, educator Marco Pignataro resides in Boston where he co-leads the Berklee Global Jazz Institute with Danilo Perez. He leads a quartet on Awakening for a set of pop, soul and jazz classics, all centered on romance. They waste no time engaging as vocalist Nadia Washington delivers soulful lyrics on “Send One Your Love”, “Resilience of Light “ and “Stand By Me”. She recites powerful spoken word on “Still Winter” and softens us on “Farfallina” and “Alone Again Naturally” with Marco breathing warmth into the vocal harmonies from pianist Kenny Werner and bassist Devon Gates. All of the music feels good, really good!
