O’s Notes: Polished jazz pianist Kenny Barron is eighty years old and playing with the energy that launched his career as a teenager. His band spans generations, including Jonathan Blake (d), Kiyoshi Kitagawa (b), Steve Nelson (vibes), and Immanuel Wilkins (a-sax). Kenny experiences several different moods on this outing ranging from spirited to relaxed in a good mix of covers and originals. “Scratch” (Monk-like), “We See” (by Monk) featuring Wilkins, and “Sunset” are highlights. We also enjoyed the bubbly “Innocent”, “Tragic Magic”, and the mellow “Beyond This Place”.
