O’s Notes: Free jazz composer and violinist Jason Kao Hwang makes music that is like an illustration. It could easily be a soundtrack for a movie or theatrical performance. Hwang creates scenes that provoke the mind and draws listeners into his themes. Burning Bridge is an octet with Andrew Drury (d), Ken Filiano (b), Joseph Daley (tuba), Steve Swell (tb), Sun Li (pipa), Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet, flugelhorn) and Wang Guowei (erhu). There are five acts with 28 scenes over about 48 minutes.“Blood“is a complex, enjoyable endeavor that allows a generous amount of spontaneous interplay around a meaningful structure.
