O’s Notes: One of the best new stories in the wake of Katrina is the quick recovery of Basin Street Records. Included in their stable of artists is Michael White (clarinet) who stays true to the tradition of New Orleans Jazz on Blue Crescent. His band includes Jason Marsalis (d) and Nicholas Payton (t). The festive element is there on “Crescent City Calypso”. “St. Louis Blues” features Michael playing tag with the horns while “Katrina” conjures up the pain and sadness of the tragic event. Michael also sings a couple of tracks including some gospel on “He Leads Me On This Journey”. It is a good session.
