O’s Notes: Trumpeter Caine leads a band including John Rangel (p), Bill Markus (b), Kenny Elliott (d), Carl Randall (ts) and others grouped from four to seven members. They have a cool sense of swing especially on “Fields of Jazz” featuring a strong solo from Caine. It’s one of many strong songs. The title suggests this may be spacey free jazz but instead we got Earthy straight ahead jazz cooked up just like the legends would play it with a taste of Latin beats in the foundation. The best news is that Elliott is proving himself as a composer and producer on this third album. He’s a force to be reckoned with on burners and also ballads like “After Thought”.
