O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist, composer Rich Halley’s latest release is Boomslang, a beautiful, large, highly venomous snake that Rich discovered as a child. It inspired his music and performed in a quartet with Dan Clucas (cornet), Clyde Reed (b) and Carson Halley (d). There is excellent bass work on “The Drop Off”. Halley is wailing throughout the session notably on “Situational” with complements from Clucas. We also enjoyed their cat and mouse exchange on “The Converse” following up on the swinging opener, “Corroboration”. Hard bop
