O’s Notes: The magic of John Coltrane is in full effect on“Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album. His band is excellent with bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist McCoy Tyner. He allows each of the formidable musicians the ultimate freedom to solo, get creative, and let their mind and spirit flow. When not leading the melody, they coalesce to strike a steady, embraceable groove and a solid foundation. Coltrane plays both sides of this coin and includes some sweet, mellow lines along with explosive interludes. There are fourteen tracks including multiple takes and a couple of unnamed originals. We’re glad this puppy was unearthed!
