O’s Notes: While he was never given all-star accolades, few can debate about the romantic notes that flow from the sax of James Moody. The intent of this set was to capture him solely on tenor sax. He plays with his quartet including Kenny Barron (p), Bob Cranshaw (b) and Mel Lewis (d) for half of the selections and expands with the ‘Brass Figures’ orchestra on the remainder of tunes. Moody puts down the sax in favor of his flute on “Cherokee” and dashes through the changes effortlessly. This 1966 session captured James in his prime.
