O’s Notes: Jeff (sax) and John (b) Clayton lead the way in a session celebrating brother groups in jazz. Gerald Clayton (p), John’s son, Terell Stafford (t) and Obed Calvaire (d) make up the rest of this band, a tight unit that delivers a powerful, precise performance. They open with “Wild Man” an original crafted to honor Thad, Hank and Elvin Jones. Nat Adderley’s “Work Song” inspired “Still More Work” and the Claytons break a sweat! “Bass Face” is more relaxed and a showcase for Gerald. Throughout the set they exhibit a cohesiveness that is like the blood bond of a family and like the teams in the spotlight, an insatiable appetite for swing. Our pick is “Walking Bass” with John on the microphone, a dedication to themselves!
