O’s Notes: Kirk is a polished cornetist and bandleader playing in a trio with Tommy Andersson (b) and Charlie Burnham (violin) on Brother. He continues to reimagine his space blending free jazz with hard bop in a very creative set of fourteen songs. The program is a mix of songs by Yusuf Lateef and Knuffke originals. They keep the stage open, allowing each of the musicians to blossom without interference. This is an appreciated approach that works well on “Brother Yusef” and “Steadily Towards The Open Window”. We also enjoyed the more engaged trio on songs like “To Mr. Dolphy”.
