O’s Notes: Conte plays both straight and muted trumpet on top of a swinging quartet. It’s a live set at Birdland in Germany during May 2000. There are only six songs but each is well developed at a minimum of eight minutes. This gives the musicians ample opportunities for soloing, something Candoli specializes in. He’s played with Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz developing his own unique style, a West Coast, cool sound with the mood of the moment. It works nicely especially on “Lover Man”.
