O’s Notes: Guitarist Carr likes to dance on both traditional and contemporary sides of the Jazz Rulerª. He opens with “The Chase”, a burner pairing him with Donny McCaslin (ts) on the melodies. They share the spotlight on melodies throughout this session wherever the band is in a quartet with Tom Baldwin (b) and Frank Russo (d). Five of the songs feature the trio without sax. That setting allows Carr to surface different styles like the Latin flavored “Costa Del Sol”. We prefer the quartet for the burning bop and cool jazz sound.
