O’s Notes: This is our first exposure to Chinese pianist and composer Dongfeng Liu and it’s a pleasurable encounter!“China Caribe“celebrates the cross-cultural mix of Chinese and Caribbean jazz with eight fresh original compositions. John Benitez (b), Min Xiaofen (ruan), Roberto Quintero (perc), Francis Benitez (d) and Feifei Yang (erhu) are the supporting musicians. They produce a relaxing set of both contemporary and traditional Afro-Caribbean jazz. Highlights are “Coltrane’s Tune”, the heavily syncopated, funky “Moophy” & “Mirror Image” and the Latin groove of “Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon”.
