O’s Notes: Red’s tenor sax is soft and throaty. It works well on both cool blues like “Avalon” and “3 Steps Up Clark” as well as warm ballads like “Indian Summer”. He gets help from Frank Wess (sax), Dr. Lonnie Smith (organ), Melvin Sparks (g) and Paul Humphrey (d). This combinations really cooks especially on tunes like Holloway’s “Struttin’ With Julie”. This new recording rekindles some to the best cool jazz!
