O’s Notes: Tom Harrell is a polished jazz trumpet player who still has a lot of juice left at 67 years old. He features a new band on Colors of a Dream that includes Esperanza Spaulding (b, vocals) and Jaleel Shaw (alto sax) along with his long time partners Wayne Escoffery (tenor sax), Ugonna Okegwo (b) and Jonathan Blake (d). They perform eleven new Harrell compositions including “Blues 2013” with Spaulding playing bass on the right channel and Okegwo playing on the left side! Esperanza’s vocals and vocalese add additional character and originality to the set especially on “Nite Lite”. This is unique, creative and worth a listen.
