O’s Notes: Trombonist Michael Dease leads a polished quintet with Steve Wilson (sax), Renee Rosnes (p), Christian McBride (b) and Ulysses Owens Jr. (d). The program includes 5 Dease originals, 1 each from Rosnes and McBride with 4 covers. Before you dismiss this as just another good modern jazz set, I’ll highlight the fact that Dease leads the melodies with some amazing passages. His tone is impeccable on this difficult instrument, something to relish especially along with this cast.
