O’s Notes: This is a cool neo-bop set with burners like “A Whole New You”, “Search” with it’s Latin beat and more mellow ballads like “Time That Once Was”. The horns take the lead on melodies but all of the band members make a contribution. The quintet is Michael Rodriguez (t), Joel Frahm (sax), Toru Dodo or Rick Germanson on piano, John Sullivan (b) and drummer Pete Zimmer. Pete wrote most of the material including our favorite, “Common Man” represented in two different takes. They celebrate modern jazz with new compositions that help to sustain the evolution of the art form.
