O’s Notes: This is a high energy set featuring the versatile bassist Brian Bromberg with an all-star lineup to die for. George Duke (p), Jeff Lorber (p), Randy Brecker (t) and Larry Goldings (B3) are among the many musicians that contribute to the project. Bromberg makes a splash leading melodies, anchoring the beats, and injecting doses of funk into all of the right spots. “If Ray Brown Was A Cowboy” is a prime example of the mix of mellow jazz with Brian’s signature elements. They throw in a little bluegrass with Bela Fleck (banjo) on “Hayride” and then get funky on “A Little New Old School” reminding us of James Brown. There are also fusion, swing and bluesy bop tunes making this a diverse set. The common theme is energy and that is Bromberg!
