O’s Notes: Keyboardist Craig Taborn’s follows up his first Junk Magic (2004), a solo effort, with this quintet recording including Mat Maneri (viola), Chris Speed (t-sax, cl), Erik Fratzke (b) and Dave King (d). We liked the funky beats of “Laser Beaming Hearts” and the eerie, exotic feel of “Dream And Guess”. “The Science Of Why Devils Smell Like Sulfur” is rather spacey and full of rage before they finally calm down a bit on “Sunsets Forever”. Compass Confusion is indeed a collection of very different emotions, misdirection and unanticipated renderings!
