O’s Notes: Pianist Spike Wilner, bassist Paul Gill, and drummer Anthony Pinciotti form a trio for Contrafactus, Spike’s new recording. Wilner’s work is excellent as he dashes across the ivory, fully liberated at this stage in his career. All the songs are first take recordings and they sound well-rehearsed. But this spontaneous gelling of the trio is what makes good jazz pleasurable, especially on tunes like “Ants Go Marching” and “Koan”.
