O’s Notes: Connie Han, the 22-year-old pianist from Los Angeles is lighting up the modern jazz landscape. She shares the stage with saxophonist Walter Smith III, bassist Edwin Livingston and Bill Wysaske on drums. Trumpeter Brian Swartz joins the quartet on the opener, “Another Kind of Right”. Bill and Connie composed 7 of the 10 selections including the frolicking “Southern Rebellion”, the retro fusion “Grüvy” and the swinging “Extended Stay”. Han’s showcase piece is a cover of Joe Henderson’s “A Shade Of Jade”, another highlight. Crime Zone is much better than expected from the racy CD cover!
