O’s Notes: Vibraphonist, Tjader established himself playing Afro-Cuban jazz before venturing on to Brazilian sambas. This CD captures the best selections from a live 2-day concert in San Francisco during June 1977. The live session also allowed the musicians, including a young Poncho Sanchez (congas), to stretch out. Claire Fischer (p), Bob Redfield (g), Rob Fisher (b) and Pete Riso (d) round out the band. The music selections are mainly Afro-Cuban as the title suggests with one nice Brazilian track “Tamanco no Samba”. It’s a nice session capped by one of Cal’s signature selections “Guachi Guara”.
