O’s Notes: Curtis Haywood is a new name on the contemporary smooth jazz circuit. This sax player bursts onto the scene with Smooth Sounds, his debut recording. It is a combination of popping new R&B highlighted by “Rain Song” combined with a couple of covers notably Stevie Wonder’s “Creepin'” and ballads like “Anytime”. Mel Holder does a good job on bass, drum and synthesizer programming. We liked the club beats of “Crockpot” and the cool vibe of “Journey” best. Curtis is on the right track.
