O’s Notes: The voice of Newman’s sax and flute are unmistakably expressive. He’s playing bop, but putting enough into each note so that you can feel his emotion. This is in contrast to the blitzing rage that is often a part of bebop solos. It makes the music easier to enjoy, to feel and to listen to repeatedly. Perhaps this comes along with his 50 years of experience as a jazz musician. He also gets help from pianist Cedar Walton, David Williams (b), Kenny Washington (d) and Bryan Carrot (vibes), a solid team.
