O’s Notes: MTKJ Quartet is Jason Mears (sax, cl), Kris Tiner (t), Paul Kikuchi (d) and Ivan Johnson (b). They play free jazz with the brass leading the charge. The pace is rapid and the mood is aggressive. Jason and Kris are ‘in your face’, pushing the envelope, and challenging tradition. They split duty writing the seven songs and while the creative content is high, these tunes are definitely accessible.
